The Church's catechetical mission aims to help the faithful of all ages to grow in both human and Christian maturity, enriching the whole of life with the leaven of the Gospel. Having introduced children to the person of Jesus Christ within the family, catechesis for school-age children presents his teachings, his ministry, and the major events of his life. Children can begin to appreciate the parables of Jesus and capture glimpses of the Kingdom of God. Catechesis for the Sacraments of Penance and Reconciliation and of the Eucharist is provided.
This program is open to First Grade through Fifth grade Elementary aged children. Classes are on Monday at 6:45 p.m. See Calendars for below for more information. Registrations open in April.
Catechists must be 18 years or older, fully Initiated Catholics, living a life of virtue, CMG Safe environment trained, and in good standing with the Church. Teens may also volunteer as catechist aids. Contact Becki if you are interested.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton welcomes all young people to prepare for and celebrate the Sacraments. Children preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion are asked to meet the following requirements:
Students should be enrolled in a First Grade CCE program or attending Catholic school to be eligible to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion in second grade. This requirement is in place so that the children will have an age appropriate knowledge of their faith and of Jesus before learning about the sacraments.
Students prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the fall and the Sacrament of Communion in the spring. Students are to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before they celebrate their First Communion and ideally within the same year.
The U.S. Bishops have recommended that the parent's serve as their child's primary teachers when preparing for the Sacraments (National Catechetical Directory #119). As a Church, we recognize that it is within the family that our Catholic faith is handed down to the next generation. At St. Elizabeth's, we begin preparing the students in the Catholic school or the CCE classroom and the process is completed in the home.
